Your Travel Guides

I was published at age six and running my first entertainment company before I was out of my teens. And yes, travel is in my veins, although I didn’t really start to venture much beyond my comfort zone until I was in my mid-20s. After that, it was:

What comfort zone…?!”

I’ve moved 49 times in my life, including a yearlong stint in one of my very favorite cities, Singapore. Nomadic? Absolutely. Adventurous? Definitely. Homebody? Not so much. As far as I’m concerned the best street in any town is the one that leads to next town. And as much as I understand the whole St. Christopher thing, I long ago adopted Yogi Beara as my patron saint: ”When you reach the fork in the road… take it!” Damn straight!

I’m lucky that I adopted a career in television back in my high school days. It’s allowed my to see the world many times around and share those experiences with a TV audience through the programs and series I’ve either produced, written or directed – sometimes all three. Programs such as Entree To Asia, Driver’s Seat, The Great Race and Island Escapes, among others, have been seen by audiences around the world on PBS, CBC, TLC, Travel Channel, CTV, Life Network, TVNZ, Hongkong Cable, XYZ Networks and even several airlines. I’m also fortunate that those travel programs have brought me many accolades including a journalism award and two Emmy nominations.

But along the way I’ve held positions and worked in practically all media disciplines, one program or project frequently overlapping into another genre:

    • Television
    • Online
    • Radio
    • Film
    • Theatre
    • Advertising
    • Publishing

Throughout my career travel has been front and center, whether it’s been utilizing the talents of tourism boards, agencies, bureaus or commissions in assisting a production, photo shoot or article, or turning the tables and creating location-based products for those same groups. So, for me, Wanderism is the next logical step in a varied, successful multimedia career.

If there’s a mantra attached to what Doug and I want to accomplish with Wanderism, it’s this: Help people ‘build a relationship with travel excitement’ and instill in them the desire to duplicate the experience. Onward.

For more than twenty years I have plied my trade as a travel journalist and photographer. But it doesn’t end there. My background is primarily in marketing and promotions and I have held numerous positions in Canada’s top broadcast media across the country — CBC, CTV and Canwest Global, in Halifax, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver — both in television and in radio. That aspect of my career has involved writing, producing and directing on-air branding, news and special event promotions, commercials and even segments for a national TV series that showcased current culture to the so-called ’tween’ market – 8 to 12 year-olds. I’ve also been nominated for many awards and was fortunate to win two ProMaxBDA Awards for marketing – a Gold and a Silver.

As a freelance journalist for the past ten years my travel articles and photographs have appeared in many diverse international publications including the following:

    • National Post
    • Irish Examiner
    • San Jose Mercury News
    • Philadelphia Inquirer
    • Toronto Star
    • South China Morning Post
    • Chicago Tribune
    • Malaysia Star
    • Georgia Straight
    • Oakland Tribune
    • Contra Costa Times
    • Helsinki Times
    • Yukon News
    • Gibraltar Panorama

In addition, I am a Lonely Planet author and have supplied travel materials to National Geographic magazine, CBC Radio, CBC News, CTV News, News Radio Ireland and several books.

It’s hard to know which came first – the travel or the travel work. But as of today I’ve visited more than 50 countries worldwide including all of Eastern Europe and much of the former Soviet Union, and spent a year living in both Ghana and Guatemala. What’s next? Why, Wanderism of course. Where next…? Good question. All I know is, travel is in my DNA!
